Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing carboxylic acid with higher efficiency by the acidification of a liquid feed containing a carboxylate salt, which shows advantageous recycling efficiency of magnesium chloride.SOLUTION: A method for preparing a carboxylic acid by acidification of a liquid feed comprising a carboxylate salt comprises the steps of: providing a liquid feed comprising magnesium carboxylate, and a gas feed comprising gaseous hydrogen chloride; and acidifying the carboxylate to carboxylic acid by bringing the liquid feed into contact with the gas feed, thereby forming a liquid effluent comprising carboxylic acid and magnesium chloride, wherein the gas feed comprising gaseous hydrogen chloride is derived from a thermal decomposition step, an aqueous liquid comprising magnesium chloride is subjected to a temperature of at least 300°C, thereby decomposing magnesium chloride into magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride, thus obtaining a solid comprising magnesium oxide and a gas comprising gaseous hydrogen chloride.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
