PURPOSE: To provide a carboxymethylcellulose compsn. excellent in salt water resistance.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxymethylcellulose compsn. comprises carboxymethylcellulose and a cerium compd. The compsn. satisfies a relationship: η2/η1=0.5 to 1.5 wherein η1 is a 1% viscosity as measured using water as a solvent, and η2 is a 1% viscosity as measured using 4% brine as a solvent.
