PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition capable of producing a powdery or granular product almost free from insoluble material and excellent in water solubility without performing complicated process for dissolving, drying and crushing by treating a carboxymethylcellulose ether alkali salt with a cellulase.

CONSTITUTION: This composition is produced from powdery or granular carboxymethylcellulose ether alkali salt and a cellulase by an anzymatic reaction of carboxymethylcellulose ether alkali salt with a cellulase and deactivation of the cellulase. As the carboxymethylcellulose ether alkali salt, a sodium salt having an ether substitution degree of 0.3-1.0 is used. As the cellulase, an alkali cellulase is preferable, and it is used in the ratio of 0.01-0.1wt.% based on the salt (water content is 3-10wt.%) and deactivated after the stationary reaction at 30-55°C for 2-15hr.
