To provide a cargo handling method and a cargo handling device capable of easily loading/unloading an automobile on/from the ground side without providing any rampway or slope on the side of a car carrier.

A watertight door 18 is provided in a carriage port 17 of a car carrier I. Slopes 19, 19a, 19b are installed on a quay 8 on the ground side. A rampway 20 is equipped on the slopes 19, 19a, 19b. An automobile 16 is moved onto the rampway 20 from the slopes 19, 19a, 19b. The rampway 20 is stretched to the carriage port 17 at the watertight door 18 to allow the automobile 16 to directly ride on a vehicle deck 4 in the ship.
