To provide a cargo handling method and device in a harbor, requiring less labor and offering more safety.
A cutoff portion 13 is provided in a caisson 11 fitted to part of a quay 10 and an elevatable deck 20 is arranged in the cutoff portion 13 so as to be elevatable while being guided along guide rails 21, 24. On the other hand, the caisson 11 is provided with a gate frame 30 cutting across the cutoff portion 13 and driving means 31 is mounted on the gate frame 30 for elevating the elevatable deck 20. The driving means 31 operates a screw jack 39 including screw shafts 41 extending from the elevatable deck 20 with a motor 38. The motor 38 is operated with remote control to permit the elevatable deck 20 to be positioned corresponding to a ship laid in front of the caisson 11, cargoes to be unloaded from the ship onto the elevatable deck 20, the elevatable deck 20 to be elevated up and the cargoes to be transferred to the quay 10.
