To provide a carriage driving device capable of correctly detecting an abnormal state of operation in the carriage driving device, regardless of a state of carriage movement, such as a controlling state that a carriage position is made to follow a specified position like a servo mechanism or an acceleration state or a constant speed state, and to provide a recording device.

The carriage driving device comprises a driving current supply means for supplying the driving current to move the carriage by driving a motor, a target position calculating means for calculating the target position of the carriage, a present position detection means for detecting the present position of the carriage, an error detection means for detecting the difference between the target position and the present position, a comparison means for comparing the difference with a threshold value formed based on the driving current, and a warning means for giving a warning when the difference exceeds the threshold value.
