PURPOSE: To prevent a carriage in an original platen cover from moving or dropping down when opening the original platen cover at an image reader to read a transmitted original.

CONSTITUTION: Since an arm 179a of a switch 179 is not abutted to the surface of a main body 101 when an original platen cover 13 is opened, the switch is not operated and a solenoid 177 is not operated, either. Since an arm 174 is turned in an arrow J direction shown in the figure by the pressure of a spring 176 and a braking member 175 installed at an arm end 174b is abutted to a gear 110 and presses it, the movement is regulated. Since the arm 179a of the switch 179 is abutted to the surface of the main body 101 when the original platen cover 131 is closed, the switch is connected and the solenoid 177 is operated. The arm 174 is turned in the arrow K direction by the operation of the solenoid 177, the braking member 175 installed at the arm end 174b is separated from the gear 110, and the movement is not regulated.
