To provide a catalyst carrier holding member which can deal with a complicatedly shaped catalyst carrier, a complicatedly shaped casing, etc., and has stable holding properties maintained over a long period without causing any positional deviation or nonuniformity with respect to holding of the catalyst carrier and which can be installed at a low cost by automation or the like and by which any exhaust gas contamination due to vaporization or burning-off of an organic binder in the member is hardly caused and to provide a catalytic converter using the catalyst carrier holding member.
This holding member fitted to the space between a catalyst carrier and a casing for receiving the catalyst carrier consists of an inorganic fibrous formed body that is formed by binding flexible inorganic fiber deflected by compressive force with a binder and has a three-dimensional skeletal structure and optionally contains an inorganic expansive admixture and further has a surface in contact with the catalyst carrier the shape of which is substantially the same as the outer surface shape of the catalyst carrier, another surface in contact with the casing the shape of which is substantially the same as the inner surface shape of the casing, and a thickness greater than the space between the catalyst carrier and the casing.
