To effect the hydrogenative desulfurization of a hydrocarbon mixture and simultaneously isomerize the skeleton of an olefin in one step for the improvement of the quality of a hydrocarbon mixture containing sulfur impurity by contacting a specific hydrocarbon mixture containing an olefin and sulfur with hydrogen and a specific catalyst system.
(A) A hydrocarbon mixture having a boiling point range from 4C hydrocarbon to 250°C and containing an olefin and ≥150 ppm of sulfur is brought into contact with (B) hydrogen and (C) a catalyst system composed of (i) an acidic carrier composed of silica and alumina gel, showing amorphous nature by X-ray analysis and having an SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio of (30-500)/1, a surface area of 500-1,000 m2/g, a porosity of 0.3-0.6 mL/g and a pore diameter of 10-40A and (ii) a mixture of metals belonging to the groups VIB and VIII and supported on the component (i) in a total amount of 2-67 wt.% based on the total weight of the components (i) and (ii). The component A is hydrogenated and desulfurized and, simultaneously, the skeleton of the olefin is isomerized.
