Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively synthesize a polymer having little of a catalyst residue with high reactivity by using, for olefin (co)polymerization, a catalyst comprising a constitutional component of a modified clay which is treated with transition metal compds. of a specific chemical structure and a compd. contg. a group 15 or 16 element in the periodic table.
SOLUTION: This catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises a modified clay in which transiting metal compds. expressed by formulae I, II, and/or formula III and a clay mineral are treated with a compd. contg. an element of group 15 or 16 the periodic table. In formulae I to III, M1 to M3 are each Ti, Zr or Hf; Cp1 to Cp5 are each a cyclopentadienyl or fluorenyl group; R' is H, a 1-20C hydrocarbyl or alkylsilyl group; X1 to X6 are each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbyl group; Z1 and Z2 are each a 1-20C hydrocarbyl, alkylsilanediyl group or the like; J is a group 15 or 16 element in the periodic table; (a) is the coordination number of J; and L is a Lewis base and the number (b) thereof comes under an equation, 0≤b≤3. The catalyst is prepared by modifying a clay and a clay mineral with an onium compd. an element of N, P, O or S, then contacting with the transition metal compds. of formulae I to III.
