To obtain an oligomerization catalyst for developing high activity and high selectivity and to provide a method for oligomerizing an olefin using the catalyst.
The oligomerization catalyst comprises a coordinative compound, a palladium compound and an aluminoxane. A compound represented by formula (1) (A is an element of the group 15 of the periodic table; B1, B2 and B3 are each independently a 6-20C aryl group which may contain a hetero atom; C1, C2 and C3 are each independently a substituent group containing an element of the group 14, the group 15, the group 16 or the group 17 of the periodic table) is cited as a preferable concrete example of the coordinative compound. Especially when ethylene is used as a raw material olefin, an α-olefin useful as a raw material comonomer for LLDPE is produced efficiently in high selectivity.
