To produce a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas, which keeps both of HC adsorbing performance and NOx adsorbing performance by restraining a strongly alkaline component being a NOx adsorbent from intruding into an HC adsorbent and has high NOx removing performance, and to provide a method for manufacturing this catalyst.
The second layer 2 containing TiO2 is formed on the first layer containing the HC adsorbent. The third layer 3 and the fourth layer 4 are formed successively on the layer 2 as NOx removing catalyst layers each containing Ce, a noble metal catalyst and a compound of an alkali element having ≤0.9 electronegativity as the NOx adsorbent. Rh is incorporated in the fourth layer 4 positioned on the surface side. The thickness of the layer 2 is made to be 1/20 to 1/5 of the total thickness of these four layers. Each of the layers 3 and 4 is formed by using the powder obtained by depositing the compound of the alkali element and Ce on alumina at the same time and then depositing Pt and/or Pd thereon.
