PURPOSE: To simultaneously remove NO, CO, NOX and furthermore to purify unburnt alcohol and aldehydes from a low-temp. range by providing a specified catalytic layer on a monolithic carrier and providing a catalytic layer having three-dimensional performance thereon.
CONSTITUTION: A catalytic layer (an inner layer) having capacity for purifying alcohol and/or aldehyde is provided on a monolithic carrier and furthermore the catalytic layer (an outer layer) having threedimensional performance is provided thereon. This monolithic carrier is constituted of a metallic or ceramic honeycomb monolithic carrier. Further the inner layer is constituted of catalytic component which incorporates at least one kind selected from among Pd, Pt, Ag and at least one kind selected from the group consisting of cerium oxide, activated alumina and rare earth elements-contg. activated alumina. The outer layer is constituted of catalytic composition contg. Pd, and/or Pt, Rh, activated alumina and cerium oxide. This catalyst for purifying exhaust gas simultaneously removes NO, CO, NOX and furthermore can purify unburnt alcohol and aldehydes from a low-temp. range.
