PURPOSE: To reduce the NOx in waste gases from a high temp. furnace such as rotary cement kiln or glass melting furnace considerably by subjecting a steel material such as stainless steel to carburization treatment in a high temp. reducing atmosphere thereby preparing the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A stainless steel pipe of SUS316 of a 6.5mm diameter is used and this is inserted into a carbon (tradename "KUREHA BEADS") fluidized layer added with a small amount of Na2CO3 of 20cm layer height. Thence, the temp. is raised to 900°C, and the pipe is held in the carbon particle fluidized layer for about 6hr, whereby the pipe is carburized, after which it is removed and is quickly cooled with water, whereby a catalyst for reduction of NOx is obtained. The resultant catalyst is adaptable for high temp. furnace such as iron and steel heat treatment furnace, lime firing furnaces or the like which employ two stage combustion and boilers. NOx is reduced by 90% than by conventional general combustion methods.
