A catalytic combustion apparatus 5 includes a catalyst layer 20 for catalytic combusting an evaporated fuel, a vaporization chamber 12 for heating and vaporizing a fuel with radiation heat 74 of the catalyst layer 20, and a porous radiation plate 30 disposed on the catalyst layer 20 in the vaporization chamber 12. In the apparatus, there is provided a temperature sensor 41 for detecting the temperature of the radiation plate 30, and precombustion is performed until the radiation plate 30 reaches a predetermined temperature. The radiation plate 30 is provided to promote vaporization of a liquid fuel. It is important factor in order to transfer the operation to catalytic combustion from the precombustion to raise the temperature as described above.
