Abstract:
PURPOSE: To ensure sealing performance for the interior of a casing without increasing the kinds of constituting parts, in a catalytic converter wherein a protector is attached to the casing by means of a bolt.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst carrier 3 is contained in a casing 2 consisting of two division pieces 5 and 6 and a sealant 4 is located between the casing 2 and the catalyst carrier 3. Flanges 8 and 9 are formed in shapes asymmetrical about the central line L1 of the two division pieces 5 and 6. Bolt holes 13 are formed in the two end parts of one flange 9 and a notch part 18 is formed in the portion, corresponding to the bolt hole 13, of the other flange 8. The two divided pieces 5 and 6 are brought into a butt against each other in a state that the flanges 8 and 9 the shapes of which are different from each other are joined with each other to form the casing 2. Welding is applied to a joining line between the two flanges 8 and 9 joined with each other. A protector 10 is attached to the casing 2 by means of a bolt 15 and a nut 16 fastened to each other through the bolt holes 13 of the two divided pieces 5 and 6.
