PURPOSE: A cation exchange membrane which, when applied to electrolysis of water, etc., exhibits low membrane electrical resistance and excellent physical strength, prepared by grafting a fluorovinylsulfonic acid monomer onto a specified film-form high-molecular substrate.
CONSTITUTION: A cation exchange membrane is formed by grafting a monomer having a unit represented by one of formulas IIWVI, wherein Z is F, OH, NH2, ONH4 or OM in which M is an alkali metal, R1 and R2 are each F or a 1W5 C perfluoroalkyl, R3 and R5 are each F or CH3, R4 and R6 are each F or a 1W 10 C perfluoroalkyl, and a fluorovinylsulfonic acid monomer onto a film-form high-molecular substrate consisting of a polymer prepared by (co)polymerizing a monomer represented by formulaI, wherein X is H, F or CH3 and Y is H or F, e.g., polyethylene, by ionizing radiation (γ-rays or an accelerated electron beam is preferred as a radiation source).
