Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cationic-group-containing copolymer improved in thixotropy and absorbability by the skin, the hair or the like by radical- polymerizing a cationic-group-containing vinyl polymer with a hydrophilic nonionic-group-containing vinyl monomer having a specified structure and a crosslinking vinyl monomer.
SOLUTION: The cationic-group-containing vinyl monomer of formula I or II is radical-polymerized with a hydrophilic nonionic-group-containing vinyl monomer of formula III or IV and 0.002-5 wt.% crosslinking vinyl monomer having at least two vinyl groups in the molecule at a temp. of 20-90°C for 1-10 hr in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator in water or a hydrophilic organic solvent uniformly miscible with water in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain the title copolymer which, when added in a 0.5 wt.% concentration to ion-exchanged water, has a viscosity at 25°C of 0.3-20 Pa s at a shear rate of 1 sec-1 or of 0.1-5 Pa s at a shear rate of 10 sec-1 on conditions that the viscosity at a shear rate of 1 sec-1 is higher than that at a shear rate of 10 sec-1.
