Abstract:

To provide a cellulose derivative which, even when used as a substrate film of a viewing-angle widening film having a discotic liquid crystal layer, can prevent crater defects from forming in the discotic liquid crystal layer.

The cellulose derivative is obtained from a pulp of a calcium content of 20 ppm or smaller. It is possible that the pulp may be a wood-derived pulp. It is possible that the calcium content of the wood-derived pulp may be about 0.01 to 15 ppm. It is possible that the cellulose derivative is a cellulose ester containing at least acetyl groups. It is possible that the calcium content of the cellulose derivative is 120 ppm or smaller. Such cellulose derivative is suited as a substrate film of a viewing-angle widening film having a discotic liquid crystal layer.
