To obtain tissue, newsprint or paperboard improved in drainage, retention, structure, etc. by adding a composition comprising a modified lignin and an anionic polymer to an aqueous cellulose finish.
An anionic polymer derived from at least one anionic monomer selected from the group consisting of a 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, (meth)acrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, styrenesulfonic acid, vinylsulfonic acid, vinyl-lactic acid, allylsulfonic acid, alkali metal salts of carboxylic acids, and combinations thereof is compounded with a modified lignin such as a sulfonated lignin having a sulfonation degree of 0.1 to 10 moles of sulfonic acid groups per 1,000 unit weight of the lignin and ≥2,500 weight average molecular weight, carboxylated lignin, oxidized lignin, and salts thereof at (10:1) to (1:10) ratio of the anionic polymer to the lignin on an active basis to provide the objective polymer composition. The polymer composition in an amount of at least 0.1 pounds per ton, based on dry weight of solids of the aqueous cellulosic finish is added to the aqueous cellulosic finish and the mixture is made into paper and dehydrated, pressed and dried.
