NEW MATERIAL: A cephalosporin compd. having a 3 position substituent of formula I [R1 is H, a (substd.) 1 to 6C alkyl, a 2 to 6C alkenyl; Het is 5- to 6-membered rings of formulas II, III (A is CH, N; B is O, S, etc.; one to two of D, E, F, G are N and the others are OH), etc.; R2 is OH, an in-vivo hydrolyzable ester; R3 is synonymous with R2 in an ortho position with respect to R2)].

EXAMPLE: 7-[2-(2-Aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-(1Z)-1-carboxy-1-methylethoxyimino) acetamido]-3-(1,4-dihydro-6,7-dihydroxy-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxamidemethyl) ceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid.

USE: An antimicrobial agent against gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria.

PROCESS: The cephalosporin compd. having the 3 position substituent of the formula CH2NHR1 is brought into reaction with a compd. of formula IV (L is an eliminable group).
