To obtain a ceramic composite composed of an oxide containing a specific rare earth element and Nb or Ta and α-Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 and having excellent fracture toughness, vibration absorption characteristics, sound absorbing characteristics, etc.
This ceramic composite is composed of an oxide expressed by formula ReBO4 (Re is Sc, Y or a rare earth element of lanthanoid series; B is Nb or Ta) and α-Al2O3 and/or ZrO2. Preferable concrete examples of the oxide of formula ReBO4 are La(Nb, Ta)O4, Nd(Nb, Te)O4, Y(Nb, Te)O4, etc. The amount of the oxide ReBO4 is preferable 5-50vol.% for the use required to have high toughness, especially as a structural material. In the case of utilizing the mechanical vibration attenuation characteristics, the amount of ReBO4 is preferably 50-90 vol.%.
