To continue communication at all times even when a high speed downlink channel is not available although high speed downloading can be attained.
In a wireless LAN in which high speed downloading is attained by using a radio wave or an infrared ray with a frequency higher in an uplink direction than that in a downlink direction in a wireless communication system, an access point apparatus and a station apparatus mutually recognize their apparatuses in order to check whether or not optical wireless communication is available. The station apparatus detects an optical signal and transmits a control signal to the access point apparatus. When the access point apparatus receives the control signal and can confirm optical wireless link-up, optical wireless communication is carried out through a downlink channel. When the link is interrupted between the optical wireless communication apparatuses, the downlink is switched into radio wave wireless communication at high speed.
