PURPOSE: To compress character data in format which facilitates writing and reading and then writes the compressed data in a memory.
CONSTITUTION: The body part 6 of character data including letter parts 4 and margin parts 5 are written in the memory so that the margin parts 5 overlap with each other. For a read of general character data, a read head address is set at a position which is an integer multiple of the longitudinal and lateral size of the body part 6. In this invention, however, the memory is accessed while the head address is shifted to the side which is shorter by, for example, the width of the margin part 5 so that the whole body parts 6 are read out. The capacity of the memory is reducible by the overlap of the margin parts 5.
