PURPOSE: To speedily perform paint-out processing by reducing the number of accesses to a memory for bit map development in the case the paint-out inside the contour line required to the development of an outline font to the bit map is realized by using an edge fill algorithm.

CONSTITUTION: When a character contour point is specified from a contour point calculation section 1, a readout register 3, inversion flag generator 4, and XOR circuit 5 read one word including the contour point specified by a character development memory 2, inverting the contour point and the bit placed on the right side of it. The data of the word of the memory 2 on the right side of the one word including the contour point are not inverted, and a readout register 7, inversion flag generator 8, and XOR circuit 9 invert the bit of an inversion information memory 6 corresponding to the word. After all the processing of the contour point is ended, the data of the word of the character development memory 2 corresponding to the bit being '1' of the memory 6 is inverted by 1 to 0.
