PURPOSE: To provide a gradation character modifying function by correcting a character pattern on the basis of tiling pattern data according to an indication for gradation character modification mode and generating a gradation-modified character pattern.
CONSTITUTION: A CPU (control part) 1 generates the character pattern corresponding to a character code inputted from a keyboard 2 and expands the character pattern in a pattern buffer 10. According to the indication for gradation modification mode from the keyboard 2, the CPU 1 corrects the character pattern expanded in the pattern buffer 2 on the basis of the tiling pattern data to generate the indicated gradation-modified character pattern. A tiling pattern buffer 12 consists of a specific dot matrix and stores the tiling pattern data as a gradation basic pattern corresponding to the rate of the number of dots.
