PURPOSE: To increase greatly the number of the dispaly characters per display screen by securing the dot structure of one-to-integer compared with the Chinese character in the lateral direction of the character dot pattern such as the Englidh figure or the like.

CONSTITUTION: When the coded character data to be displayed is applied to CPU2 from host system 3, CPU2 gives checking to the contents of the field modification data within the reception data to decide the Chinese character and the English figure according to the data contents of "0" and "1" respectively. Then the field modification data are written in sequence into field modification memory 11, and at the same time the dot pattern data of 24×24 dots and 12×24 dots are read out in the case of the Chinese character and the English figure respectively fron the corresponding addresses each and based on the coded character data supplied to the address line of character pattern memory 6 and then written into refresh memory 7. After this, the contents of memories 11 and 7 are read out to be displayed on CRT display unit 9.
