PURPOSE: To extract a stable feature even for the variation of the size of characters and to make a system high speed and high in the accuracy of recognition by using K-th power sum of the distance between an observed point and character lines, normalized by a character frame using a sub-pattern as a feature that indicates the distribution of character lines of each direction looked from each point of a character pattern.
CONSTITUTION: Horizontal scanning is started again from a point at which horizontal scanning is started, and relative size of X coordinate of a change point which is the content of a change point memory and X coordinate of an observed point is judged by a comparator 36. In the case where X coordinate of the observed point is larger than the content of the change point memory 33, K-th power (K is a constant) of the difference between X coordinate of the observed point and the content of the change point memory 33, normalized by a character frame ΔX taken out from a character frame detecting section 4, that is, the value of K-th power of the distance between the observed point and character lines normalized by ΔX, is added to a register (register A) 38 of left direction of 16 bits initialized beforehand at the time of extracting horizontal features at every point using an arithmetic circuit 37.
