Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charged particle accelerator capable of accelerating a large-current ion beam of over 1000 mA to an acceleration energy of a few tens of mega electron volts without providing a special ion beam focusing mechanism such as an electrostatic quadrupole lens.SOLUTION: A charged particle accelerator comprises: a charged particle source 2 for generating positive charged particles; acceleration power supply units 3A and 3B for applying an acceleration voltage to accelerate the charged particles; a pair of electrode plates 5A and 5B for acceleration voltage application, which allow the charged particles to go therethrough in turn for acceleration and which is connected to the acceleration power supply units 3A and 3B through switches 4A and 4B; electrode plates 6A and 6B for voltage division, which are arrange and connected between the pair of electrode plates 5A and 5B for acceleration voltage application so as to form a voltage-division circuit; and a control part 7 for controlling the switches 4A and 4B in ON and OFF with a predetermined timing so that the charged particles are made to go through the electrode plates 5A, 6A, 6B and 5B to accelerate in turn.
