Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charging apparatus configured to maintain cleaning property of a charging member with a simple configuration without complicating or enlarging a structure, to prevent reduction in charging characteristics, while preventing an abnormal image.SOLUTION: A charging apparatus includes: a charging member to be used for uniformly charging a latent image carrier surface; and a cleaning member for removing a foreign substance deposited on a surface of the charging member, in contact with the surface of the charging member. The cleaning member is configured to select a first mode or a second mode as a driven rotation state with respect to the charging member, by changing contact pressure with respect to the charging member. In the second mode, a relation is set so that a linear velocity ratio of the cleaning member with respect to the charging member is larger than in the first mode.
