To provide a charging device that keeps a load of a drive motor constant when reciprocally moving cleaning pads over a charging wire.
The charging wire 102 has a spring 109 at one end and is extended to the charging device 19. The cleaning pads 111 and 111' receive rotating forces from a support shaft 114, so that they are brought into press-contact with the charging wire 102. The cleaning pads 111 and 111' slide over the charging wire 102, thereby cleaning the charging wire 102. The drive motor 120 reciprocally moves the cleaning pads parallel to the charging wire 102. Lever pressing parts 106 and 107 switch the frictional forces applied to the charging wire 102 by the cleaning pads 111 and 111' according to the movement direction when the cleaning pads 111 and 111' are reciprocally moved parallel to the charging wire 102.
