PURPOSE: To simplify a device and make a checking line quick by feeding a cam shaft in the radial direction while rotating the cam shaft so that the normal of a point to be checked on a cam face coincides with the optical axis of an image pickup device.

CONSTITUTION: A cam shaft S is set to the checking device by a handling device and has both ends supported by a head center and a tail center 12. A command related to the classification of the shaft S is given to a camera 27 from a controller, and the camera 23 is shifted to the position corresponding to a cam face C to be checked by a motor 23. After checking, the camera 27 is shifted successively to following cam faces C. The shaft S is rotated by a motor 16, and simultaneously, a slide base 3 is moved horizontally by a motor 4 to feed the shaft S in the direction of an arrow X synchronously with rotation of the shaft S. That is, rotation and feeding in the direction of the arrow X of the shaft S are controlled simultaneously by the controller to control the shaft S so that the optical shaft of the camera 27 which scans the cam face C coincides with the normal of the point to be checked on the cam face C.
