A checkout counter 1 is equipped with a metal detector 8 for detecting whether a metal is included in commodities or not. This counter 1 comprises a reading means 4 for reading information showing the necessity/ non-necessity of metal check attached every commodity and display means 4a and 4b for displaying the contents of the information read by the reading means, and it is constituted so as to stop the operation of the metal detector 8 when the information read by the reading means 4 shows the non-necessity of metal check.
