PURPOSE: To obtain an excellent deodorizing performance to nitrogen and sulfur malodorous gases and improve the workability and water resistance of a deodorizer by containing a complex powder of chitosan and an inorganic or organic acid salt of a metal selected from transition elements of the 4th period of the periodic table.
CONSTITUTION: Chitosan preferably has a deacetylating ratio of 50-90% and a polymerization degree of 240-2000. Preferable transition elements belonging to the 4th period of the periodic table are Cu, Zn, Fe and Co. As the inorganic acids forming salts with these metals, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid are preferred, and as the organic acids, acetic acid is preferred. A complex powder in which the salt of the metal forms a complex with chitosan, preferably, in the ratio of 0.3-2.3 per unit of amino glucosamine repeat unit in the chitosan branched chain is used. For example, the above complex powder is added to and uniformly dispersed in a beaten pulp slurry having a concentration of 2% in the amount of 5 parts by weight to 100wt.% of the pulp, and aluminium sulfate is added followed by paper manufacture, whereby a deodorizing paper can be obtained in a complex powder yield of 98-99%.
