To provide a chromium-containing steel securing corrosion resistance and toughness in the weld zone, and optimum as stock for a vessel in terms of cost.
The chromium-containing steel is used for a material for the vessel storing a water-based paint including a water phase of pH 3 to 12 containing halogen compound ions of 0.01 to 200 mass ppm. The steel contains, by mass, Cr of 9 to 19% and N of ≥0.008% so as to satisfy C+N ≤0.03%, Al of 0.002 to 0.2%, S of ≤0.01%, and further contains Ti and Nb individually or in combination and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, wherein when C+N content is expressed as x (mass%), the Ti content y (mass%) and the Nb content z (mass%), x, y and z satisfy 8x≤y≤0.6 and 18x≤z≤0.6 when Ti and Nb are individually contained, and x, y and z satisfy 1<(y/8x)+(z/18x) and y+z≤0.6 when contained in combination.
