PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid monomer and an oligomer capable of providing an arylcyclobutene based polymer of a highly heat resistant insulating material having low thermal expansion property without using a solvent having danger of ignition and explosion and free from void and pinhole.
CONSTITUTION: The objective cis-bisarylcyclobutenylethene expressed by formula I (Ar is aryl; R1 to R3 are H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, CN, NO2, NH2, COOH, alkoxy, aryl, acyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylamide, trialkylsilyl, trialkylsilyloxy; m is 1, 2 or 3; n is integer of 1-5) and being liquid at room temperature, especially cis-bisbenzocyclobutenylethene expressed by formula II. This compound can be produced by subjecting a compound of formula III (R4 is alkyl or aryl; X is halogen) which is a reactional product of a halomethylarylcyclobutene and trialkyl (or aryl)phoshine to Witting reaction with a compound of formula IV under basic conditions.
