PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously obtain the subject new compound derivative useful as an antitumor agent by aerobically culturing a strain, belonging to the genus Actinomadura and having the ability to produce a benzanthracene derivative in a culture medium and collecting the resultant product from the culture.
CONSTITUTION: A strain, belonging to the genus Actinomadura and having the ability to produce a benzanthracene derivative expressed by the formula [R1 is H, COCH3 or OCO(CH2)2OC0H; R2 and R3 are H or COCH3; R2 and R3 may form a ring through one quaternary carbon atom to provide a dimethyl acetal derivative] [e.g. Actinomadura verrucosospora Z-17 strain (FERM BP-3903)] is aerobically cultured in a suitable culture medium at 37°C for 3 days by shaking and the resultant culture solution is filtered to collect the microbial cell. The collected microbial cell is extracted with acetone and the obtained extract solution is concentrated to extract the residual solution with a mixture solution of chloroform and methanol at l:1. The resultant extract is purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford the objective benzanthracene derivative.
