The coated metal material is a material coated with a coating agent containing a mixture of a poly(vinyl alcohol) with 85-100% saponification and a poly(carboxylic acid) in (97/3) to (5/95) weight ratio and an aqueous solvent and is produced by applying the coating agent to a metal material and heating the resulting metal material at 120°C or higher. The weight decrease of the coating layer is not more than 3% in the case the resulting coated metal material is immersed in hot water at 60°C for 30 minutes.
