Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the breaking strength of a coated fiber and to lower the appearance rate of the low-breaking strength part in particular and to improve a yield by providing a specific carbon film on the surface of a quartz glass optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A carbon film 2 of <=100 Angstrom film thickness formed by thermal cracking of gaseous hydrocarbon is formed on the outer peripheral surface of the quartz glass optical fiber 1 and a primary coating 3 consisting of an org. polymer is applied on the outer periphery thereof. Further, a secondary coating 4 of an org. polymer is provided on the outer periphery thereof. For example, polyurethane acrylate UV curing resins are used for the primary coating 3 and the secondary coating 4 and are cured by UV rays. A sample of 10m length is drawn from the coated optical fiber obtd. in such a manner and is subjected to a tension test. As a result, the probability that the optical fiber is broken by low breaking tension is drastically lowered as compared with heretofore.
