To make it possible to form a uniform coating film in spite of high-speed coating application with a device for continuously applying a coating liquid on a traveling base material after spreading the coating liquid in the transverse direction of a die by forming a manifold to a shape having a space in the counter gravity side from the position of a slit inlet and providing the space with air discharge holes.
The coating liquid is uniformly spread in the manifold 1 and is extruded to the base material 14 facing the manifold so as to be metered to a specified thickness at a liquid parting edge 6. At this time, the manifold 1 in the coating applying stage is formed to the shape having the space on the counter gravity side as well from the position of the slit inlet 4 and the space is provided with the openable and closable air discharge holes 8 communicating with the outside of the die. One or more pieces of grooves 12 having a sectional area of 0.01 to 10mm2 are formed between the slit outlet 5 of the coating applying lip surface 11 and liquid parting edge 6 of the die over the entire width in the coating applying region in the transverse direction of the die. Further, the coating applying lip surface 11 is formed as a plane and the angel θ of the liquid parting edge 6 is set at a range of 10 to 70°, by which the application of the uniform coating film is made possible even at the time of high- speed coating application.
