PURPOSE: To execute coating to a uniform coating thickness with good accuracy by forming the coater of a blade support, a doctor blade mounted thereto, a blade driving mechanism which moves said support upward and downward, a spacing display device and a paint receiver forming member which forms a paint receiver together with the doctor blade.

CONSTITUTION: The paint receiver 26 is formed of the doctor blade 16 and the paint receiver forming member 25. Both are once imposed on a base material gliding plate 11 and a zero point is adjusted. The gap forming surface 16a of the doctor blade 16 is thereafter raised by the blade driving mechanism 17 by as much as a prescribed spacing from the front surface of the base material 2 while the spacing display device 21 is viewed, by which the spacing uniform over the entire part of the coating width is formed. Paint 34 is then packed into the paint receiver 26 and the base material 2 is run so that the paint is uniformly coated thereon.
