The coating apparatus includes a plurality of inkjet heads arranged in rows corresponding to a coating width in the width direction of a support medium being continuously transported and coating the support medium by ejecting liquid droplets of a coating liquid, a not ejecting head detecting part detecting an inkjet head ejecting no liquid droplets, and an auxiliary head having at least one inkjet head capable of positioning in the width direction of the support medium in the vicinity of the inkjet head rows wherein coating is continued by switching the not ejecting head to the auxiliary head.
