To obtain a coating composition representing a new nonhalogen-based flame retardant-containing coating agent impairing no physical properties of conventional halogen-based flame retardant-containing coating agents, and to be effectively used in motor vehicle interior trim materials including car sheets, car mats and ceiling materials in particular.

The coating composition is obtained by incorporating 100 pts.mass, on a solid basis, of a synthetic resin emulsion with 1-300 pts.mass of one or more kinds of such a nonhalogen-based flame retardant that the surface of nonhalogen-based flame retardant particles containing both phosphorus and nitrogen is coated with hydrophobic inorganic oxide microparticles.
