Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition improved in penetrativity into and adhesion to an aged old coating film by adding a specified copolymer to an aqueous medium.
SOLUTION: A cationic alkali-crosslinking monomer of formula (I (wherein R is H or CH3; Q is an alkyl, CH2C6H5 or a group of any one of formulas II to IV; X is a halogen; Z is formula V or formula VI; Y is an organic or inorganic monovalent anion; and (n) is 1-3) in an amount of 5-99.5wt.% is copolymerized with 0.5-95wt.% alkoxysilane monomer of formula VII [wherein R is H or CH3; Z is (CH2)n or formula VIII; (n) is 0-3; X is OCH3 OC2H5 or OC2H4OCH3; Y is H or an alkyl; and (a) is 1-3] and at most 94.5wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer at 60-95°C for 1-5hr in the presence of a polymerization initiator in water and/or an organic solvent under acidic conditions to obtain an aqueous medium containing a copolymer. This medium is mixed with a film-forming aid (e.g. Butylcellosolve), an antifoam, a pigment, a thickening inhibitor, etc.
