PURPOSE: To obtain a coating composition for coated paper, having excellent coating viscosity and coating properties, good in surface properties and capable of producing the coated paper excellent in dry and wet strengths.
CONSTITUTION: The characteristic of this coating composition for coating paper comprises using a latex produced by polymerizing 100 pts.wt. monomer mixture composed of (1) 45-75wt.% vinylic monomer and (2) 25-55wt.% aliphatic conjugated diolefinic monomer with (3) a chain transfer agent (X) containing sulfur element in an amount within the range of 0.05-2.5 pts.wt. and a dimer (Y) of a nuclearly substituted a-methylstyrene in an amount within the range of 0.05-2.5 pts.wt. so as to provide 0.1-3.0 pts.wt. total amount of the components (X) and (Y), setting the pH in the reactional system at 5.0-7.0 when the conversion attains 70-80% and then polymerizing the residual monomers.
