To provide a coating, drying apparatus which is capable of obtaining a coating film with stabilized quality by preventing the generation of wrinkles even when the thick film coating of an ink with low viscosity is applied to a thin substrate, and to provide a coating, drying method.

In the coating, drying apparatus, a plurality of guide rolls 7 which have a coating part 5 to apply a coating liquid on the substrate 4 and a drying part 6 and which guide the substrate 4 are disposed in the conveyance path between the period when the longitudinal and belt-like substrate 4 is unwound from an unwiding roll 2 and wound to a winding driving roll 3, and hold-down rolls 10 are arranged so that each makes a pair at both sides of the axial direction in order to prevent the generation of the wrinkles of the substrate 4 by means of the drying treatment in the drying part 6. The guide roll 7 is rotated and driven at the same speed as the conveying speed of the substrate 4 in accordance with the conveyance of the substrate 4 and disposed so that the substrate is horizontally conveyed at least in the drying part 6. The hold-down roll 10 is arranged so that it is brought in contact with both of the width direction edge part of the substrate and the peripheral face of the guide roll.
