To provide a coating fluid for use in the formation of an electron transporting layer capable of manufacturing an organic EL element, which can be driven with a low voltage, by a simple method that uses a small number of materials and does not need such heat treatment at high temperatures as has an adverse effect on a large-scale apparatus and elements; and an organic EL element having an electron transporting layer formed by using the same.

This coating fluid for use in the formation of an electron transporting layer of an organic EL element which is laminated on an anode with at least a light-emitting layer, an electron transporting layer and a cathode in this order, includes a predetermined organic compound as an organic semiconductor material, a metal compound capable of releasing to this coating fluid at least one of a metal ion selected from an alkali metal ion, an alkali earth metal ion and a rare earth metal ion, and an organic solvent capable of dissolving the metal compound at an ordinary temperature.
