To provide a coating material for a wall surface which is easily applicable and has a humidity controlling function, also has the texture similar to that of wallpaper for pasting, and to provide a method for coating wall surface, new wallpaper and a wall material.

The coating material for wall surfaces comprises a mixture of 70-85 wt.% of water-insoluble cellulose and 15-30 wt.% of adhesive, where the water-insoluble cellulose comprises cellulose, and the adhesive comprises one or two or more among starch paste, konjak paste and glue, and cellulose ether. The coating method comprises applying an anchor coat on the surface of a wall substrate, and then applying the coating material for wall surfaces on the anchor coat; or applying the coating material for wall surfaces on the wall substrate, drying it and then grinding the coated surface until grain materials are exposed.
