In the die type coating method for supporting the back surface of the substrate by the backup roll, coating is performed by setting the coating gap between the leading end on the downstream side of a die nozzle lip and the substrate supported by the backup roll on the basis of the surface of the substrate supported by the backup roll opposed to the leading end of the die nozzle lip or the outer peripheral surface of the backup roll opposed to the leading end of the die nozzle lip.
