PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method which enables the formation of a coating film having excellent resistances to acids and scratch and a good balance among water resistance, weatherability, etc., a good dispersion of a pigment in the coating film, and the use of a high-solid coating compsn.
SOLUTION: This method comprises the step (A) of forming both a prim coating film and an intercoating film on a substrate, the step (B) of either coating the intercoating film with a base coating material and then with a thermosetting coating compsn. or coating the intercoating film with only a thermosetting coating compsn., and the step (C) of either curing both the base coating film and the resultant thermosetting coating film or curing only the thermosetting coating film. The thermosetting coating compsn. contains an acrylic resin (a) having hydroxyl and epoxy groups in the molecule, an acrylic resin (b) which is formed from a free-radical-polymerizable unsatd. monomer having an acid anhydride group and of which the acid anhydride group undergoes ring-opening and is half esterified, at least one resin (c) having hydroxyl and acid groups and selected from among acrylic resins, fluororesins, and polyester resins, and a melamine resin (d).
